Child Therapy

Play therapy and psychological support for children’s emotional wellbeing.

When your child is struggling with worries, difficult feelings or changes in their life, therapy can give them a way to express what’s happening and work through it. I work directly with your child to help them understand their feelings, build confidence and develop ways to manage everyday challenges.

I’m Dr Sam Casey, a Registered Play Therapist (RPT) and Accredited Mental Health Social Worker (AMHSW).

How I work

I draw on Focused Psychological Strategies (FPS) and a range of play therapy approaches, tailoring sessions to your child’s age, development and needs. The work can include exploring feelings, developing coping skills and practising helpful ways to respond to worries or difficult situations.

Play gives children a way to express experiences they may not yet have words for. Your child may lead the play, or I may use games, stories, creative activities or conversation to work with a particular difficulty.

I also consider your child’s experiences at home, at school and in their relationships. Parents and carers are involved throughout the therapy process, so we can understand the bigger picture and support your child beyond the sessions.

What I can help with

  • Anxiety and worries
  • Depression and low mood
  • Self-esteem and confidence
  • Strong emotions and difficulties managing feelings
  • Trauma and difficult experiences
  • Parental separation, grief, loss and other family changes
  • School and friendship difficulties, including bullying and feeling left out
  • Emotional and social support for children with neurodevelopmental conditions, including autism and ADHD

For children with autism or ADHD, sessions are adapted to their communication, sensory needs and ways of learning.

Medicare rebates and mental health care plans

As an Accredited Mental Health Social Worker and Medicare provider, I offer eligible Focused Psychological Strategies services under the Better Access initiative. Medicare rebates may be available for these sessions with a valid referral.

Your GP can assess your child’s eligibility and prepare a Mental Health Treatment Plan, often called a mental health care plan, with a referral. Eligible referrals from a psychiatrist or paediatrician may also be used.

Please ask about fees and rebate eligibility before booking. Private therapy appointments are also available without a Medicare referral.
