WHY PLAY PRESCRIPTION®

Healing and growing alongside children - beyond the therapy room.

THE PROBLEM

Most people were never taught how healing and growth actually happen.

Parents are handed advice, strategies and parenting books. Professionals are handed generic training and behaviour management plans. And when those don't hold up in the real moments - the tantrum in the supermarket, the shutdown in the classroom, the big feelings at bedtime - the conclusion most people reach is: "I'm doing it wrong."

But the problem was never the person. The problem is that the understanding of how children heal and grow - the lens child therapists train for years to develop - has stayed locked inside therapy rooms, available only to trained mental health professionals. While the people who are actually with children every day teachers, coaches, allied health professionals,  or anyone working with kids or parents - work without it.

WHAT WE BELIEVE

The beliefs behind the framework.

Behaviour is communication.

Underneath every behaviour is a need. When we learn to read what's beneath the behaviour - instead of reacting to the behaviour itself everything changes.

The relationship is the intervention.

Children don't need a therapist to benefit from therapeutic play principles. Research consistently shows that when the adults in a child's life learn and apply these skills, outcomes for children improve significantly - sometimes more than in clinic-based therapy alone.

The child in front of you will meet the child inside you.

Supporting children and families will always bring up your own story. Self-awareness and inner work are just as important as knowledge - especially when it comes to breaking cycles.

Play is how children make sense of the world.

Therapeutic play is not about buying the right toys or running structured activities. It's a way of being with a child - following their lead, staying present, and creating the conditions where they feel safe enough to process what's hard.

Healing isn't a finish line.

It's something you live. Good enough is the goal, and repair matters more than getting it right. Nobody should have to break themselves to break a cycle.

THE SHIFT

From managing behaviour to understanding it.

Play Prescription® takes the child-therapist lens and makes it practical and useable beyond the therapy room so parents can break cycles alongside their kids, professionals can transform their practice, and organisations can build cultures that truly understand children. Not more information. Not more willpower. A different approach - grounded in psychology, play therapy principles and over 20 years of clinical practice.

One framework. Multiple applications.

HER STORY

20+ years of clinical practice and research

Dr Sam Casey has spent over two decades working directly with children, parents, and families navigating relational trauma, behavioral struggles, and emotional dysregulation.

Through her clinical work and doctoral research, Dr Sam realized a fundamental gap in traditional parenting and therapeutic models: most approaches focus solely on managing a child's behavior from the outside, rather than addressing the adult's internal world or using play as the primary therapeutic language.

"We cannot support a child's emotional growth without reflecting on our own. True cycle-breaking starts when the adult does the inner work."

This realization led to the development of the Play Prescription® Method — a structured, repeatable framework that combines play therapy, attachment theory, and reflective inner work into actionable tools parents and professionals can use every day.
